Intern Success Story: David and Jodi Bagwell hired Nick Bailey as a summer intern after he won a scholarship from NAWIC. He came to Bagwell Construction in the summer of 2005 to learn more about the construction industry. Since his first summer with BCS, Nick has gained valuable experience about what it takes to be a general contractor. He has had the opportunity to work at all levels of the company from field operations to sales and marketing to working with city and county public officials. Nick recently decided to change his major at Colorado State University from Engineering to Construction Management because of his experience working with Bagwell Construction.
It was like a dream come true. The United Methodist church in Moorpark had a leaky roof over its office building; and with a prayer and several phone calls, Saturday afternoon a new roof was installed at no cost to the church.
The driving force behind the effort was Moorpark resident Jodi Bagwell, a relative newcomer to the church.
"I decided I wanted to get my children more involved with the church a few months ago," said Bagwell, who is now a member of the board of trustees.
Taking part in the community effort was Great American Roofing Company, based in Oxnard, which donated most of the supplies and labor; Bagwell Construction, based in Moorpark, which donated labor; and Simi Valley Rubbish, which waived its fees for the disposal of the old roof.
"The problem of the leaky roof came up a few months ago," said Bagwell. "An inspection was done. The problem was primarily the office roof, and some repairs needed to be made to the roof over the church itself."
The church office shares its space with the office for the United Methodist Rainbow Children's Center, a preschool.
To get the ball rolling, Bagwell talked to her husband, David, who called his friend Rod Menzel at Great American.
"I've worked with David before," said Menzel. "I was glad to help. My dad and I run this business, and we try to give back to the community whenever we can."
Menzel said donating his labor to the project was no problem. Finding supplies was not as simple, but a few phone calls to wholesale suppliers solved those problems as well.
Supplies were loaded onto the roof earlier in the week and demolition work started early Saturday morning.
"We had five workers here at 7:30 a.m." said David Bagwell. "I convinced a couple of my friends to help out, and with several people the work goes very quickly."
By noon, the old roof had been completely stripped off. And though friends had helped remove the old roof, licensed contractors installed the new roof. The crews took a quick break for lunch and then the job was done by late afternoon.
About her first big project as a board member, Bagwell said she feels very successful.
"I've never undertaken a project like this before," she said. "I didn't know what to expect, but this has been great. It all came together so quickly and easily. I definitely think there was some divine intervention."
Thursday, March 20, 2008 Dear David and Jodi,
Thank you so much for giving our students an opportunity to speak with you and your colleagues. Your time and experience is invaluable to us and we really appreciate it. The Job Shadow was one of the best we have been on. The students came away enthused about pursuing their careers. Lunch was delicious and an unexpected treat.
In closing we would like to say, that without help form the business community our program would not be a success. Helping the students is a win, win situation for us all! Again thanks for meeting with us. I hope we can do it again in the future. It was a pleasure meeting you both.
Sincerely, Valerie Harrington and Cindy Arndt, Employment Specialists
